Under the slogan; "It is time for us to rethink our consumption habits"

Abu Dhabi; March 17, 2017; Department Of Energy (DOE) officially launched today, Tuesday, January 17, 2017, its Demand Side Management (Program) Tarsheed Under the slogan; "It is time for us to rethink our consumption habits". The long-term program aims at helping and encouraging customers across the emirate to use water and electricity more efficiently in line with the directives of our visionary leadership and Abu Dhabi Plan goals regarding environment protection and the sustainability of natural resource for the benefits of the future generations.

Tarsheed is a part and parcel of DOE's strategy, launched earlier this year, with the ultimate objective of cutting 20 per cent of water and electricity by 2030. It is designed to help consumers to take rational decision regarding reducing their water and electricity usages and to understand the impact of wasting them on the environment.

More than 30 initiatives were evaluated out of which 6 have been selected for implementation as a first wave. The selection was based on the amount of projected savings, ease of implementation and the possibility of achieving the savings in a short period of time. The rest of the initiatives will be added subsequently.

First wave initiatives include:

Residential Education and Awareness Initiative; this is one of the most important initiatives. Its main purpose is providing electricity and water conservation information, and using all available channels to reach out to the Abu Dhabi community, to be able to educate all on the best practices for conservation, availability of high efficiency products and upcoming Tarsheed initiatives.

Seminars will be held in schools and universities, in collaboration with ADEC, to make sure that conservation and efficiency become part of our education system curriculum

Early detection of water leaks;   this initiative include the development of an application to analyze daily water usages in internal water networks of buildings where smart meters are installed with the ultimate objective of early detection and dealing with water leakages cases.

Consultancy services to the industrial institutions; DOE's distribution companies with provide consultancy services to a number of industrial players in the emirate, that represent the current and future industries, to educate them on the best practices and most up-to-date technologies that could help them reduce their consumption.

Mosque Water Reduction Program; DOE is working now on replacing all faucets in the ablution areas of mosques across the emirate with high efficiency, durable, automatic shut-off, low-flow faucets along with awareness programs to reduce the mosque's annual water consumption. The initiative also aims at spreading the culture and practices of water efficiency across mosques in Abu Dhabi Emirate.

Non-residential education and awareness; DOE have developed 2 manuals to assist Facility Managers in reducing electricity and water usage which are Manual for the Efficient Use of Electricity in the Government Sector and the other on the Efficient Use of Water in Non-Residential Facilities.

The Tarsheed website, TarsheedAD.com, will provide access to these manuals as well as other technical and operational guidance on reduction of water and electricity usage.

Moreover, Facility Manager Forums will be developed where efficiency measures, best practices and electricity/water reduction success stories can be shared for adoption.

Replacement of AC and lighting systems used in government buildings; This initiative aims at replacing the AC and lighting systems in use in government building with electricity efficient systems. To streamline the process, achieve tangible results and allow the mechanisms to mature before expanding, the initiative will be first applied to the government sector.
